The first four editions of the Good Beer Guide to Belgium & Holland (GBH) learnt about great cafés from local beer lovers, tourists, other guidebooks, our own readers and by simply going out and finding them. Now we want help from you.
GBH covers the whole of Benelux - that's the three countries of Belgium, the Netherlands (Holland) and Luxembourg. We have room to include around 400 cafés and we want these to be the very best beer drinking places in the region.
Obviously because GBH is bought mainly by tourists, business travellers and ex-pats we favour the cities and popular tourist areas. However, our readers get everywhere and as more beer nuts get the message about Belgian beer the more they roam. So if the café is good enough it goes in.
What GBH looks for is a commitment to good beer.
So in Flanders most café entries will have a beer list of over 50, showing either specialisation in one or two types of beer or a desire to offer customers a wide range of different styles. In the French-speaking south or in the Netherlands there is less of a tradition of beer cafés with large lists and we will sometimes drop the entry criterion to 40 beers. In the northern Netherlands or Luxembourg we will go even lower.
GBH is generally unimpressed by long lists of widely available beers from global or more commercial independent producers. Half a dozen beers from a couple of local microbreweries are likely to make far more impact than fifty household names.
We do not care about the style of the café but we do expect it to try to be good at whatever it tries to be. GBH does not get all sloppy about traditional street-corner local bars, nor does it gush with enthusiasm about Art Deco flagship projects from major financial institutions, though both will find a place in our pages if the beer list is good and the café struts its stuff confidently.
We don't insist on great food and many of our cafés serve no food at all. But tell us if you ate well or if the menu was dire. Likewise, if there are lodgings tell us how much you paid and whether you got value for your bill. Out in the boondocks we like to know about great non-beery hotels too.
So if you think you have come across a previously undiscovered gem with a good beer list, let us know on the form below. If you are the first person to report a café that is good enough to get a full entry next time round we will send a free copy of the next edition when it comes out.
SO YOU WANT TO BE A GUIDE INSPECTOR?
GBH inspectors are a small and trusted band of people whose tastes appear impeccable - which means that they rarely disagree with the Editor. Being an inspector is a thankless task. The most you can expect to get out of it is a free copy of the next edition and a very occasional beer from your elusive Editor. All our inspectors visit anonymously so you can't even get beer bribes.
But you will be supplied with a bang-up-to-date list of all the café leads in the part of Benelux you are planning to visit, plus local brewery news. In exchange for this all the Guide asks for is accurate feedback to a prescribed format. No experience required but immaculate taste (see above) is essential.
How do you go about evaluating a pub? Here is the evaluation form I use.
